Swanville Rural Fire Association
THE SWANVILLE Rural Fire Association was formed in July, 1954. Culdrum Township, Swanville Township and the Village of Swanville were the first members. The fire department also served Bruce and Burnhamville townships and the Village of Sobieski. The department bought its first fire truck in 1954 for $2262.00 it was a 2 ton Dodge and carried 500 gallons of water-pumped 200 gallons per minute.
In 1986 a committee was formed to look into purchasing pagers for firemen and 1st responders. Otherwise emergency personal were alerted by a siren or called on the telephone where to report to a fire.
The Swanville village hall was added on to, to house the 1954 fire truck. More room was needed for the fire department, the Swanville Creamery had room in their building were they allowed the fire department trucks to be stored. In the spring of 1988 the Fire Association voted to build a new building on property at the north end of DeGraff Avenue.
Today the fire department building is home to 5 fire trucks, an equipment van,a grass truck and the first response rescue truck. The meeting room is used for monthly meetings for the firemen, responders, and the Swanville Township board.
Previous fire chiefs are Elmer Schmidt, Bob Oslund and present chief Jerry Hollermann.
There are about 20 volunteer firemen on the department. These firemen do not get paid for fire calls or mileage to the calls, strictly volunteer. With help from the surrounding Townships and the Swanville Lions Club the fire department is able to update trucks periodically.
Swanville Women's Civic Club
Swanville Women's Civic Club was organized on September 27th, 1920 by Mrs. George Christie, and was under the name of The Swanville Women's Civic Improvement Club. Most of the early improvements affected the children in the community. The first thing purchased was a cot for the school library, so if a child became ill he/she could lie down. Other early accomplishments were "Slow" signs on the streets by the school, ringing of a curfew bell, abandoned buildings removed, a light put in the bandstand in the park, stopping unnecessary noise on dance nights, bicycle and coaster wagons off the sidewalks, automobiles speed enforced, gate fixed and trees planted at the cemetery, and help get rid of slot and pinball machines. Some of these things may seem silly to talk about now, but at the time they were very important to the community.
Our club has been sponsoring the library since 1940, purchasing shelving, computers, remodeling, and programs offered for anyone in the community. The Club hosts an annual Mother/Daughter Tea for all graduating senior girls that live in the Swanville area. We also give away two scholarships each year of $500.00 each named after one of the charter members "Mabel Beilke". We support the local food shelves, sell daffodils for lancer, raise money for Hospice with our tree of lights, and help with Christmas Bags for the seniors and shut-ins. Our main fund raiser has been selling homemade pies, pizza and malts at the Mid-Summer Carnival.
Swanville Lion's Club
The Swanville Lion's club was chartered in 1952. The Swanville Lion's Club donates thousands of dollars each year to various projects. Some of these projects are school programs, scholarships, Swanville park improvements: with buildings, playground equipment, a lion fountain. Improvements to Pillsbury beach, improvement to the Senior Center, the Swanville Rural Fire Association: building, vehicles, equipment and training, the Swanville 1st response Team: with vehicles and equipment. City projects like the new street lights, and many, many other programs and projects. The Swanville Lion's are also involved in charitable gambling, but it's main fundraiser is the Mid-Summer Carnival. The Carnival started back in 1962 as a Circus and has grown into a huge successful Carnival. There is always a clean, safe, and fun Midway, bingo, world famous barbecue chicken, and of course the beer garden.
